Walking and sailing
Dia, from the south side, has the shape of a crocodile. Next to Dia Island is a much smaller island called “Paximadie” (which means “baked bread” in Greek). Dia is a very beautiful island with plenty of sight-seeing opportunities. The boat trips that normally go there will stop in front of Dia Island, so you will have the opportunity to swim and snorkel and will then sail back to Crete. Our sailing excursion to Dia will show you all the secret spots on Dia Island.
We will leave at 6.30 AM with a sailing boat from Crete to Dia Island. We will pass the Paximadi Island to the east side of Dia Island, where you can see beautiful cliffs. From the north of Dia we will sail to the west side of the island. At this spot you are usually able to see dolphins.
Dolphins on Crete: dolphins have been spotted around Crete since about 3,500 years ago; you will see them in various images at the ancient site of Knossos.
If the weather is good, we will make a stop in a bay on the north side of Dia Island. Afterwards we will sail to Madonna bay. Madonna bay is situated on the south side of Dia. We will stop here around 12.00 PM and walk for approximately 2 hours around Dia Island. You will not find any tourists here! We visit a cave where a lonely priest used to live. On a small mountain on the south side of Dia Island you are able to see Crete; from this spot you are also able to see the largest mountains of Crete: the “Ida” (Psiloritis) as well as the “Dikti” (Lassithi). On this mountain you will have a great view of Dia Island.
On Dia Island you will find the unique Kri Kri goats (these are originally from the Samaria gorge), rabbits, lots of beautiful birds and other wild animals. Dia is not under the influence of humans, and no people live there.
We will also visit some picturesque chapels. After our hiking tour we will prepare a delicious barbeque on the beautiful bay. And, of course, it is possible to swim and snorkel.
Around 4.00 PM we will sail back to Crete, and around 6.30 PM we will be back on the island of Crete.
