Excursions in and around Mirtos

Chrissi island
Chrissi island is known as the Caribbean of Europe. The amazing, gold-like beach, the palm trees and the numerous shades of blue in the clearest waters of Europe will give you a tropical sensation. We will leave the harbour of Ierapetra by boat and spend a fantastic day on and in the water with ample time for swimming, snorkeling, walking and sun bathing.

Ierapetra: Europe’s most southern city
Although this city seems dusty and chaotic, it is definitely worth a visit. Even if it would only be for the shopping in the quaint boutiques and modern shops, a visit to the real life gypsy market or a stroll around the petite harbour with its ouzeri’s and kafeneions.

The Sarakina gorge
This impressive gorge is located close to the village of Mirtos and is a real challenge to hike through. The trail itself is about 12 kilometres but can be adjusted according to our needs. This hike is especially adventurous in Spring and Autumn when there is water in the gorge. We will have to wade through or clutter over small rivers, we may even need to swim! An amazing experience for the more adventurous amongst us.

The hike through this gorge can be expanded with other hikes in the area. Please ask us about the possibilities for multi hiking holidays.

Night excursion Mirtos
We will leave the village later in the evening for a revitalizing walk through the sultry evening air to the observatory close to Mirtos. Here we will be able to admire the Cretan night sky through the telescope where you will be enchanted by the unbelievable amount of stars and planets that can be seen.

Village hike to Kalami, South Crete
A beautiful walk through nature’s finest to the deserted village of Kalami. The village is hidden between high rock formations and is surrounded by fields of flowers and olive trees. The village itself has been deserted at the end of the 50’s by the original population. It may feel like a ghost town to some since the town was left on its own seemingly from one day to the other. In many a house one can still see personal belongings through the kitchen window… a teapot on the table…. cups next to the sink…. Even the blackboard in the little school is still up on the wall and the abacus awaits its students on the headmasters’ desk. The cobbled streets were made for pedestrians and donkeys; there were no motorized vehicles in sight yet. This village will give you an excellent impression on how life used to be on Crete 60 years ago.

This walk through nature is suitable for all ages and can be adjusted from 5 to 12 kilometres as to our desire.
